“The Cul de Sac of Firethorne…”

Because of “Yours truly” 🤗 it became a nest of homes… for young families.

When first I saw it… it was a recessed neglected lot which an ancient white elephant of a “once” elegant Mansion stood. 😶

Time had worn the hulky structure beyond unkempt.

Tall… half dead trees…had collapsed like an old hags’ hair hidden from the town road leading… to the back woods of Lawrence.

An imaginative real estate agent had found the site for me to look at in 1970.

We wanted to build a house with a specific builder, but he had retired after completing his last project of homes.

I was too late for that project…thus it had no lot available for us.

I went searching for a place to build our dream house…in this mature suburban town on Long Island’s south shore.

The agent made us an appointment to meet the ancient couple who built the place & still called the giant relic of decay…home.

They welcomed us, proudly showed their mansion. 👴👵

We smiled patiently while they told their colorful history, from Verona, Italy. That influenced the facade & landscaping. It was built around1919.

The truth we were not interested in their crumbling, faux Italian wreck, of yesteryear. (Its location was what we wanted, but it was too big & expensive for us).

I annoyed the retired builder to see the property. He wasn’t interested at first, but after we promised to buy one and the other 3, would sell to friends quickly…he gave in.

The now named Firethorne Circle was built, and sold before construction began.

Our house was #1 Firethorne Circle. It was a recessed country cottage, wood shingled and used brick. It had a porch across its front facing the circle.

#2 became a tall, pillared colonial mac mansion. It was formal, imposing.

#3 a charming barn angled farmhouse…very unimposing…early American.

#4 a beige brick & white marble-trimmed French chateau, with arched windows.

All & all an eclectic combo of architecture in a cozy setting… (after we paid the landscapers…😊🤑 who did their magic). 🌳

We neighbors were all just about 30 years old give or take a year, when we moved into our brand-new houses on this brand-new Cul de sac. 😁

December 2024

Yesterday, the last man, standing from our Cul de Sac…passed away…

It happened half century after the birth of our Firethorne Circle. 😢
