Yesterday, my granddaughter Tina, called from Nice, France. It was a delightful surprise.

Her mother, my eldest daughter, Lee had mentioned her trip was a part medical conference in England, then a childhood friend’s wedding in Cannes …afterwards.

I asked if she was going alone, she had told me she was going with Ashley.

Oh, I thought cousins travelling together…how sweet. (The girls live in different cities, these days, but were so close as little girls).

They are in their 30’s.

Leave to me, “Gram- cracker”, the nickname they gave me, to make trouble, innocently.

Tina without warning sticks, (after greeting me, briefly), “Ashley’s on the phone, “Talk to Ashley, Gram-cracker”. 😃

Tina's father & my daughter, are divorced for years. Ashley is his sister’s child, who I haven’t seen nor had any communication with.

So, as you can imagine putting me on the spot “speak to Ashley ". I was taken back. 🙄

“Hello, Ashley, I hope you girls are having a good time”, I say, cheerfully. 😊

I don’t what to converse with her about, so I ask, “How is your mother”?

She sorta hesitates, makes a nervous cackle, then she strongly answers, “She’s dead”!

I am expectedly floored, I think I should have heard about it…as my daughter was fond of her x-sister-in-law, Ashley’s mom.

“Uh… when this happen”?

“A few years ago,”, she responses like she’s jesting with me.

Would you believe she’s so lighthearted…as she is holding a conversation with Tina, simultaneously. I’m thrown, so I stupidly ask, “Is she dead emotionally or literally”? (Perhaps she had an estrangement with her mother), I reason since she doesn’t sound remorseful.

“Both”! she giggles nervously. 😕🥵

I wish I could die; I was so humiliated, as the old saying goes…

Again, I lost for words…I ask, “How’s your stepfather”? 😶

“Huh… what, who”? the girl giggles. 😲

Oh, my gawd! I suddenly realize…

😮This was NOT cousin Ashley…but an old college friend of Tina’s.

Why would my granddaughter just put this strange young woman on the phone with me, from Cannes?

I don’t I think she’ll ever do that to me again!
