“Mothers’ Day in Charles Schultz Park”
Glorious sunny warm, clear day sees me by the East River… 🕶after a week of rain & cold.
Smiles 😁glore, every body seemed to be happy enjoying Mothers’ Day.
I had planned to meet up with my younger daughter at the small doggie play park in Charles Schultz East River Park.
Because of the finally bright Spring day our local resident music man was back playing upbeat music on his sterio shopping cart speaker contraption. 🛒🔊🎶Rock & Roll, Jazz, Popular, Oldies & Goodies,Greek, and Italian, etc.
His music was mixed & varied pleasing the throng of strollers, bikers, and children alike. Some little ones were dancing in front of his seat on a bench in their own rhythm.
I mouthed, “HELLO” & then as he played, “Rock Around the Clock” I walked over to say, “I don’t want to tell you how old I am, but I remember dancing furiously to that song from “Junior’s Candy Store” jukebox. I could get 5 song selections for a quarter. 🌝☀🌞$.25 (circ early 1950’s. He smiled so sweetly.
I was a young teenager then…This Junior’s was over the bridge from Brownsville where I lived. My friends & I would “catch up” with each other, after school, drinking a small Coke with a salty hard pretzel… …and dancing. (circa early 1950’s)
I picture a teenage Dee-Dee in my off-white felt skirt with black Roman Numerials stenciled along the hem and clockhands leading down to the numerials.
I would wear 2 starched crimolenes underneath that would plumpout my skirt espectally making sure when danced & twirled it bellowed. The painted clock on the skirt became a round faced one.
I wore my fuzzy angora sweater -set with my poodle pins pinned on 1-side of the cardigan that made me feel oh so pretty. 🤗
Bobbie sox purposely folded slightly over my white & black saddle shoes were so ‘Hep”(cool).
My long mane was tied up high upon my head with a ribbon… so it would swing as I moved.
“Baby Pink” lipstick frim a Woolworth’s counter looked like pink wax smeared on my lips. I Didn’t let mom see it as “You’re NOT old enough to wear lipstick” she would berate me.
