Here’s how Cicely Tyson & I Met © 2)
I decorated a client’s apartment as an Art Deco soft pearl- cloud fantasy… years ago.
It was on Fifth Avenue opposite The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park…on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan.
His rental was in an apartment building that had a circular driveway, and Doormen, around the clock.
It wore an impressive facade…including a working fountain with cupids playing in it.
Inside a marble and crystal lobby that reeked of high rents.
I was hired as an Interior Designer for an apartment in this luxury building. 🤑 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
So, for function and luxury I “upholstered the living room walls in grey velvet”, to keep the place a quiet oasis…for the building was on a bustling, noisy Avenue.
My floor plan included a huge square pit of tufted sofas, that was covered in a dove Moire silk, with gray and white fur pillows.
A mirrored & steel coffee table completed this conversation pit that was angled, to better absorb the glorious Central Park view, from its one all-windowed wall.
Blooming white orchids stood on it, as well as collection of Erté miniature sketches, framed in clear glass.
Tall palms in porcelain subtlety patterned Jardinières graced the room, which seemed to float high… above green Park.
A semicircular bar with clear Lucite stools, filled a mirrored corner that reflected of the spectacular view.
My client was very pleased. 😁
Then, 3 years later, he was transferred to California for a better business opportunity.
He commissioned me to get rid of this rental by finding a tenant, to take over the remainder of his lease, and buy the furnishings.
Well, along comes Cicely Tyson with the rental agent, and falls in love with the Deco apartment, and takes it “lock, stock & barrel” … as they say.
She hires me to help make it… more hers, and Miles Davis, her then husband.
Cicely & I got along famously…she was delightful to know…
