Bittersweet call me a sentimental old fool…but I teared up while watching the PBS special. Perhaps because I enjoyed it so much and … it also hurt me so much.
Why?
1- They are from a by gone era, the pair just about a dozen years my senior. 🧓👵
I remember so well their singing and showbiz personalities… such a popular duo, I frequently watched on TV.
2- Steve Lawrence went to Thomas Jefferson High School... in my old Brooklyn neighborhood. He was in school the same time as my older sister, Sondra. Later on, my husband, Arthur and younger brother, Chuck attended that same dear old institution on Pennsylvania Avenue, in East New York.
Danny Kaye & Shelley Winters and many other notable figures were amongst its graduates. 🎭
This flashed on me how time has changed my childhood Brooklyn neighborhood…all a nostalgic flashback for me… 🤔
3- Steve & Eyde were so young, talented, in love, so fresh-faced. Their future was all ahead of them…on this special. 😍😍
4 -When they were newlyweds, they moved into a just completed apartment house facing the East River. They became close friends of my friends Lola & Bert Noble, who were also newlyweds, that were fellow tenants.
Bert & Lola told me how everyone adored the cute, down- to -earth couple. 🤗🤗
Steve reminded me of my first Beau. I could see the sweetness, gentleness & humor in his demeanor. 💕
Eyde was cute as a button, perky with an amazing voice. 💖🎶🎵🤗
STRANGE EMOTIONS …🤔
I feel like I could see their future in this retro presentation, so I got melancholy seeing them in all their youthful happy splendor.
Eyde died a while ago, leaving her Steve. Last I read Steve has Alzheimer's.
